The End of the Holidays

At the start of this week, my Mom finally took down her Christmas tree. The trees along a little stretch of 111th Street also disappeared this week or some time over the weekend. It's odd how that the stretch alongside the road sticks, even as time has passed and new semester begins.

A string of evergreens lit for the holidays dotted the block-long median which separated the busy throughway of 111th from a short local road allowing access to the houses on the north side of street. In many ways, it was picture-perfect scene, those holiday-lit evergreens with giant boxes wrapped as Christmas presents. Though I never stopped with the camera. Something about the busyness of moving. Something about holding an image in my mind instead.

Those trees, I'll remember. I might even remember to look for them next December, when the season comes with short cloudy days and cold weather and the desire to brighten a sliver of life with festive holiday mood.
