For the past several weeks, Sandra and I have been watching episodes of Big Cat Diary on Animal Planet. The shows have been aired between 5 and 6 am Central Time, so while we're not up at that time, modern technology has allowed us to tape the shows for us to view in the evening.
This fascinating series was filmed in the Maasai Mara, a large wildlife preserve in Kenya. I'm surprised that I had never seen episodes of the show before since the original series dates back to 1996 on the BBC. The Diary focuses on one family of each of the big cats: cheetahs, leopards, and, of course, lions. While showing the strength and grace of the animals, the series also highlights the social relationships of the big cats, particularly on the development of young cubs in each of the three species.
If you can find episodes of Big Cat Diary, it's well worth seeing. You can find out more about the show at Wikipedia. Also, you can visit a blog by Jackson Looseyia, who worked with the BBC's Big Cat Live team in 20008, and has continued to blog about the big cats of Maasai Mara.
