What's Learned in Defeat?

In his concession speech after losing the election for the Illinois seat in the US Senate, Alexi Giannoulias congratulated his opponent Mark Kirk and then asked the supporters at the Election party to give Kirk a round of applause. Some started booing. Alexi shot them down "Give him a round of applause". He then said later, that after speaking with Kirk, "I think he will make a good Senator". A guy in the crowd yelled out No! Alexi then added "I think he will make a strong Senator". Then a guy (probably same guy) yelled out "he's a liar!" Alexi started admonishing the guy "no no he's our Senator and he's going to help a lot of people."

The election for Senate seat in Illinois was particularly ugly, vile. The commercials from both Democratic and Republicans sides polluted the airwaves and disgusted me. I've been looking forward to the end of the campaign.

Then the night comes and the defeated politician, Alexi Giannoulias, shows a side I wish I would have seen on the campaign trail, in one of the ads that was aired. Maybe if he were this man, an unifier, very gracious in defeat, and not the man, a divisive figurehead that all his political handlers told him to be...just maybe...he would have won the election.
