Point Park, Lookout Mountain

Along the short walk from the Incline station to Point Park, several nice homes stood. Given the views and size of the places, I'm sure several of them are quite pricey. Though they certainly add to the ambiance.

Point Park, run by the National Park Service, is a "steal" among the toursity things to do on Lookout Mountain. Located at the northern tip of the ridge, the park gives a dramatic view of Chattanooga, the Tennessee River, and Lookout Valley. You can even catch a bird's eye view of the interstate heading into town.

The park is dedicated to the Civil War's Battle of Lookout Mountain. Though compared to the battles of Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge, the "Battle Above the Clouds", as Lookout Mountain's skirmish is often called, wasn't much of a battle. Additionally, the battle took place along the base and really wasn't above the clouds. Still, the information on the plaques throughout the park were informative and gave a good feel for one of the more decisive times in the Civil War as the taking of Lookout Mountain was a step in the Union's bid to control the Chattanooga area.

While Point Park is fairly small, it offers a lot. Being at the northern tip, the park offers more than 270 degree view of the surrounding valleys as you walk around to the different vantage points. It's quite stunning even on a hazy day.

For more information about Point Park and other local Civil War battle sites, visit the National Park Service website. Even if you're not interested in military history, the park offers a wonderful view of the Chattanooga area, so I would recommend visiting.
